La victoria

dominican republic

La Virgen, located in La Victoria, Santo Domingo Norte, is a community of approximately 2,000 residents and 479 homes. It was founded in 1997 by the Asociación de Campesinos Sin Tierra, a group of families seeking a safe place to establish permanent housing and stability for their children. Although La Victoria has greater access to transportation, education, employment opportunities, and health services compared to the other communities, significant needs still remain.

METHOD of sustainability

CE worked with local leaders to adapt and customize our model of sustainability to fit the community’s needs. Residents have extremely limited access to education, transportation, and healthcare services. Here is our approach thus far:

1

Engage Community

We identified local leaders and assisted in assessing the community’s needs, focusing on immediate and long-term goals. They identified the need for a health center with permanent access to medical services, paved roads, potable water, and recreational spaces for families and children.

2

Providing Care

Our first primary care trip was in early 2026. Primary care and specialty groups, such as audiology, will assess and treat patients, developing a relationship for longterm care.

3

Development Projects

We are working with local leaders to determine what development projects are needed most. These projects target environmental factors that affect healthy outcomes, such as clean water, adequate housing and accessible structures.

4

Scoping the Clinic

Building a clinic is critical to establishing consistent care and, eventually, registering with the Ministry of Health. We’re in the early stages of working with community leaders to identify potential spaces to be refurbished into the future clinic.

Current focal points

Needs assessment

Conduct a needs assessment to identify sanitation challenges and develop public interventions, such as latrines.

health Training

Train local community health workers to provide health education.

Increase capacity

Expand the number of primary care trips and introduce specialty teams, such as audiology.
